Hi Jen. No, I don't think I used anything with peanut oil in it when he was a baby. We knew from 6 weeks something was wrong and I paid very close attention. I did, however, eat peanuts and was nursing. I had no idea I could be harming him. So, if I had to point at something, that's where I would pin the blame! Peanut butter crackers!!

Curious- you said that many of the lotions and sunscreens you had contained peanut oil, which I know may also be called "Arachic oil" or "Hypogaeic acid" may also contain peanut. However, I have looked at the lotions and sunscreens around the house- Cetaphil, Keri, Arbonne Baby, Coppertone Water Babies SPF50, Fruit of the Earth Vitamin E, Johnson's & Johnson's -- and NONE of them contain peanut oil or similar substances. (Peanut, as a legume, being different from an allergy standpoint from tree nuts, such as macadamias included...) Which products have you or the other posters found that were guilty of peanut oil inclusion? I don't know if it's necessary for everyone to go with a California Baby-type product, which, one should note, also contain fragrances...

Great question Romina. FAAN does not consider coconut a tree nut but the FDA does. So does my allergist.

I didn't give it much thought until Tyler had a mild reaction at his last allergist appointment. The only way to to know if you should is to test. Until then, if I were you, I would avoid. Better safe than sorry I guess.

Do you steer clear of coconut as well. The food allergy network says that the FDA listed coconut as a tree nut in 2006 but the allergist say it is not a tree nut.

When my daughter had her first diagnosis, I had to "86" a bunch of my personal products, too. It just didn't seem worth it to keep them around.

Always look at "fancy" soap as well as lotion. They love to put nut oils in those, too!

Thanks for this post! My daughter was diagnosed with tree nut allergies today. Mostly to cashews, pistachios and almonds. However, we will avoid all tree nuts. I would have never thought to look at lotions and sunscreen!

I enjoyed this post and appreciate the link. I noticed my facial scrub and some of my other lotions contained tree nuts shells and oils just after we got our PA diagnosis. So off I went to the bathroom closet and medicine cabinet to see what was in our "stuff", and I looked on the internet too. Some Oil of Olay products have peanut oil in them and many lotions and cosmetics have tree nut oils or shells in them. I wish non-food products would be labeled for the major food allergens too! California Baby is a great product and is completely soy, wheat and nut oil free! We get the sunscreen, bug spray, soap, shampoo and salves. It is fantastic and lasts forever. Maggie has very sensitive and white skin (she's a redhead) so we have to use it a lot and often-she has never had a problem. The only thing she had a tough time with was a salve that had some rosemary and lavender oil in. At the time she had cracked knees and it was a bit anaseptic. But-it's fabulous stuff and cheaper if you buy it on line.
