A Taste of the Forbidden

Last month I found out that my Grandma in Oklahoma was near death. As quickly as I could, I hopped on a plane and traveled home to be with my family. It was a long trip and I barley ate anything that day.

Sitting in the waiting room of the hospital that day, my family offered me some food that someone gave them. Quickly, I eyed a can of mixed nuts. I have a radar for nuts. This time, however, it dawned on me that I would not see any nut allergic people (Tyler and my husband) for 3 days.

Could nut residue last that long?

I knew it would be silly to think that what I ate that day could have any affect on people in Michigan! (I was in Oklahoma remember!)

So I laughed and took a few nuts. Some family members knew of my problem with nuts. Others had not seen me since Tyler's birth and had no clue.

As I ate those nuts I realized I had forgotten just how good they were! So I ate more. And more. And even more!

They were so good!

By the end of that day, everyone knew my story about nuts. It became a family joke: Pass the nuts to Robyn!

And, boy, did they ever!

I ate so many nut products I'm pretty sure I gained 10 pounds in 3 days!

Here is what I ate...and enjoyed every bite!

*Mixed nuts
*Pecan pie
*Nutter butter cookies (one of my former favorite cookies. Yummy!!)
*Peanut M&M's
*Chocolate covered peanuts
*Roasted peanuts
*Chocolate almonds

Here is a picture of me with several of the nut products I ate. Included in the picture are the family nuts: my dad and uncle!

OK, 'fess up. Who else has done this sort of thing!

I definitely do that! I usually don't miss eating these off-limits foods, but the holidays were very hard for me this year. I miss walnuts, cashews, and the yummy granola from Costco!
(So sorry to read the news about your Grandmother!)

Me!! I've done that, too! I feel guilty for indulging and feel as if somehow it's going to harm my child even though he's nowhere near by!! I went to Logan's Restaurant last week w/a friend and peanut shells were everywhere. I was really stressed out by the time we left bcs of the all shells even though DS was with DH at home and in bed! I don't know when I started seeing peanuts as "the enemy"...it just kind of happened!

But ohhhhhhhh! Don't they taste so good after not eating them for awhile??!! :)

Sometimes foods are hard to resist when they are in front of you. I'll admit I sometimes have them (only when dd not with me). We always had nuts around when I was a kid, especially at holiday time. However, the one nut (which is one of my favorite), I will not have even if I was away from my daughter for a few days. It's pistachio, they scare me now because her reaction to pistachio was so bad. If I can eat nuts, I prefer almonds and the pecan pie you mentionted sounds good!!!

I have the radar for nuts too and whenever there is talk of food, I think nuts..

Too funny - just a couple weeks ago, I was at a party that had sandwiches with roasted almonds - oh my goodness, I think I ate ten of those things! So yummy, and I'm sure it was because it had been three years since I had had a nut. Yum!

That is so funny because I was just talking about that today at work. I went to visit my Gma in WA state (I live in CA) and when I got there I went to the store and got a bag of Reese's and every morning had toast with Peanut butter. I went 'nuts'! It was sooooo great!

so glad to hear I'm not the only one! I love peanut butter, and I really miss peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, but I do eat them when my daughter is at school (I admit, afterwards, I'm a nervous wreck, wiping everything down, using a disposable knife that I throw away, etc.), but it's worth it!

It's amazing how hard it is to change the mind set once you are away from you loved one with nut allergies. I have had a special nut something or other on the rare occasion that I know I won't kiss my child for 12 or so hours. Oh, how I miss them but avoiding them is worth it for sure!

My brother has a nut allergy and as kids we all knew to keep anything that had nuts away from the home. But the one thing my sister and I would always have was the a block of the nut chocolate to be make sure he wouldn't come into our room and eat our chocolate! It still works now, even though we are all grown and out of home! My poor nut allergic brother....

I'm sorry about your Grandmother! About the nuts-my hubby and I used to go on a trip to the mountains once a year without the kids and we would pick up fudge with nuts in it on the way. I still freaked out worrying that maybe some of it would drop on my shirt or something so have to wash everything before we go home! Peanuts are the enemy! lol

Still new to PA and can't imagine ever taking another bite in my life at this point. Sometimes I almost worry that the jars of peanut butter are going to jump out and attack us in the aisles of the grocery store.

My BF is allergic to peanuts. I eat peanut butter when I'm sad that he lives far away. It's my silver lining.

I have a box of Almond Vanilla instant oatmeal at work, which I get to indulge in whenever I don't have time for breakfast in the morning. So I am a huge offender of breaking the rules pretty frequently!
