Peanut-Free Candy Anyone?

If you read this blog last fall, you know that we literally crossed the border to find safe candy for Tyler. I don't really understand why Canada seems to understand the need for peanut-free candy more than the US does. I'm just thankful we only live an hour from the border.

I received the following information from Karen at Avoiding Milk Protein (thanks Karen!). Since so many of you are looking for safe treats for your PA Kid, I thought these links to Canadian candy were worth posting. Prices for this type of candy are certainly higher than you would pay at the store but worth it for few safe treats that you can't get in the US (like Kit Kat!)

Canadian nut free facilities have been expanding and popping up in recent years as American neighbors watch in wonder. With the economic down turn, companies are unlikely to build in the US, especially with costs involved with insuring the facility is indeed nut free.

This has created a growing industry of companies that ship much wanted nut free from Canada to the US. Some of these companies started as candy shipping companies, then out of demand have categorized their nut free products. Most of these companies have grown out of the demand for Nut Free Canadian products. The newest shipper is Canadiannook, who only sells Canadian nut free products.

I not have dealt with most of these companies so I can't personally endorse them. I have, however, dealt with Allerneeds.com and have a favorable review of them coming later this week.

We live in Canada and I agree that we are very lucky to have the products that we do that are peanut free. My son has become very good at finding products that are peanut free. We just found these great fruit snack type sticks that are peanut free and equal 1 whole fruit serving. I like that they don't have as much of the processed stuff that other fruit snacks seem to have. If you ever need anything sent to you I would be happy to arrange that for you. We were just at Walmart and am happy to report that again this year the Valdecouer company, which is completely tree nut and peanut free, has their individually wrapped easter treats out. This company has put these out for Easter, Halloween and Christmas. They are perfect to send to school with the kids. If you want to see the box let me know and I will get you a picture of it.
Love this blog, have gotten great resources from you, Keep it up.

We order our candy from Vermont nut free chocolates online! It is safe and also allows these children all the holiday treats as well:-) My child safely eats Hershey's kisses as well and he has a peanut allergy. Does anyone feed their children this or are you just being safe than sorry?

Thanks

We use Hershey's Kissables. Hershey's seem to be good about labeling things for cross contamination if there is a chance that it might have been. We have also ordered from peanutfreeplanet.com...good selection. If Robyn reads this I have emailed you I would love the template to Tylers emerg plan.

Shannon: That Easter candy sounds very interesting. I would love to see a picture! My email is on the sidebar.

Where in Canada are you? I'm in Detroit so I just cross the bridge over to Windsor, Ontario.

Anonymous: We feed Tyler Hershey's kisses and we have never had a problem. I trust Hershey's labeling because they do label for cross contamination for many of their products.

Dana: Please forgive me for being so late in getting back to you! My computer crashed and I am trying to retrieve it from the old computer. Life has been so hectic I have not had a chance. Hopefully next week I will get some time. I promise, promise I will get you the plan! :)

I teach in a school and can not have anything at all containing peanuts, but my first day of school activity is one that involves hersey kisses. I read the label but didn't see anything about peanut free. I do not have a peanut allergy myself and am looking for some advice here.

Hi Coralie. Hershey's is excellent about labeling. If they do not have a warning about any nuts listed under the ingredients, they should be safe. I would, however, run it by the parents of any nut allergy child in your class. We all have our own comofort levels. But, for us, Hershy's is safe without a nut warning.

You are great to be so concerned! Thanks for your question.
