Since this is a peanut allergy blog, obviously I normally blog about peanuts. But I know many of you avoid tree nuts as well. So, I couldn't resist mentioning something alarming I read recently that effects those living with a tree nut allergy. The culprit will surprise you.
Puff Plus with lotion. Huh? That's right a tissue!! The culprit is the shea butter that is in the lotion they use. Believe it or not, the shea they derive the "butter from is actually a tree nut! Who would have thought that?
It amazes me every time I learn a new place that nuts can hide! Luckily, it appears that the Kleenex brand has aloe and vitamin and no tree nuts. I like Puffs better but since we will not know if Tyler is allergic to tree nuts until January, we are switching to Kleenex.
Good grief! Who would have thought nuts could hide in a tissue?

Just to let anyone know, I asked our allergist about this and he said it was not necessary to avoid shea butter. My daughter is also allergic to tree nuts. I would advise people to ask their allergists about this. No reason to avoid something when you don't have to!
Thanks for the tip. What I read that alamred me said to avoid. So it may be a comfort level issue for some. But, yes, a quick call to the allergist would be everyone's best bet in this situation.
My son has a tree nut allergy and the avoidance list we were given has shea butter on it. I am aware of shea butter in lotions and shampoos but never would have thought to check tissues.
Thanks for the heads up! Shea IS on our list to avoid, and I find it in so many things. I often believe the health and beauty aids have more potential for harm because they have lurking ingredients you'd NEVER expect. Thanks!
I'm afraid that some allergists and esp regular doctors are not as aware as they need to be-I have learned so much from this blog and from peanutallergy.com that our allergist never told us. So don't always believe everything your allergist/doc says-if theres any chance you think it could be dangerous to your child-avoid it. Not worth the risk. :-)
Oh... oh, that is so depressing. There is so much to keep track of and watch out for... It's exhausting!
My daughter has a life-threatening allergy to tree nuts. We bought her Puffs Plus with lotion yesterday to soothe her red nose, as she had an awful cold... she had a reaction to the tissues. I can only imagine that it was the shea butter.
Last weekend my 10 year old daughter with peanut allergies used chapstick with shea butter in it. She had a reaction - no anaphylaxis but VERY swollen, painful, slightly itchy lips. I'm know that everyone's allergies are different but reactions to shea nuts can happen - be careful.
