A Scary Moment for the PA Kid

We had a bit of a scary moment yesterday afternoon that I bet other parents of PA kids have had. We had a great morning as we toured a preschool that can accommodate Tyler's peanut allergy (more about that tomorrow) and then came home to eat lunch. Both of my boys seemed as energetic as ever. Then after lunch Tyler asked for some pudding. He had never had pudding before but I decided it was safe.

Then, moments after finishing his pudding, his voice changed. All of the sudden, he was completely stopped up. He was complaining of a sore throat. I was a little alarmed but did not see any swelling or anything else that would indicate an allergic reaction. Still, I gave him a dose of Benadryl and laid him on the couch to watch him. I called my husband to alert him to a possible reaction. I never got overly worried since it seemed so mild but I also wasn't letting him out of my sight.

About an hour later, he seemed fine. He was back up playing and his voice had cleared up. I thought maybe it was indeed a mild reaction. Then I touched him. He was burning up!! I took his temperature only to see it was 101.4. For once, I was actually happy to see he had a fever. This was certainly better than the alternative. By the end of nap time, my other child had 101 temperature, too.

I was probably the happiest mom around to have two sick kids. But, I would certainly rather deal with two colds than one peanut reaction any day. For me, the uncertainty of his PA is what scares me. Something as simple as a cold coming on so quick can let your mind leap to scary, scary places.

Oh bless your heart! I can understand that completely. It's almost funny...."yay...a fever!" I'm so glad that the boys are ok. :-) Karen in NC

Oh gosh. Been there too! Poor little guy, I guess the cold hit him kind of suddenly. Yes, a fever is much less scary than the alternative. You know, it's just that constant awareness that a reaction could happen at any time that makes our minds go a bit wacky sometimes I guess. Hope your kids are feeling better in the morning!

I can totally relate to this. Every time our PA kid is sleepy, I'm asking her if her mouth is itchy, etc. I'm so worried that she'll have an anaphylactic incident with a drop in blood pressure and go into shock. She's so hyper all the time that I worry when she's sleepy. I agree that catching a cold is way better than an "incident!"

I can understand being scared in that situation.
The worse thing for me is when my 4 year old starts saying his throat hurts when he is eating. This has happened a few times (and happened yesterday at lunch). I was searching the labels over and over desparately wondering if I had missed something or wondering if he had another allergy that I am not aware of. Nothing happened and after a few minutes he said his throat didn't hurt anymore. I am telling you- that scares me!!
